Gauge calculator
If your swatch has more or fewer stitches per 10 cm than the pattern, the garment will come out a different size. This calculator shows the stitch count that gives the pattern's size with your gauge.
The formula
New stitches = pattern stitches × your gauge ÷ pattern gauge. If your gauge is 20 and the pattern's is 22, a 120-stitch pattern becomes about 109 stitches, because your stitches are larger and fewer fit in the same width.
Measure the swatch properly
{ul(["Knit a swatch at least 15 cm square in the pattern stitch and wash or block it as you will the garment.", "Measure over 10 cm in the middle, away from the edges.", "Count half stitches, or measure over 20 cm and divide by two for accuracy.", "If the numbers are far apart, change needle size first rather than adjusting stitches."])}For shaping, see the increase and decrease calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Does row gauge matter?
Yes for length. Adjusting stitch count fixes width only. Rows per 10 cm matter for lengths and for patterns written in rows.
Should I round up or down?
Round to the nearest number that fits the pattern repeat.
