Row counter apps: how they charge, and what to ask
Row counters are small apps with long lives. The way they charge shapes how long they will be around and what they do with your data.
The three models
| Model | Pros | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Free with ads | Costs nothing | Ads and tracking; project data may feed analytics |
| One-time purchase | Pay once; simple | Updates can slow if there is no revenue after launch |
| Subscription | Funds ongoing development and sync | Recurring cost for a tool you may use occasionally |
Questions to ask
- Where do my projects and PDFs live? On the device, or on a company server?
- Can I export my data in a file?
- Does the free version have undo and a PDF view, or are the basics gated?
- What happens to my data if I stop paying?
- Does it work offline?
Where Stitchlight stands
The web app is free, with no ads, no account and local storage. A native app with Apple Watch and sync is planned; its pricing is not decided, and we will publish it before launch rather than hide it. Join the launch list to hear about it.
