dc: Double crochet (US)
Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops). This is one of the building-block stitches. Patterns assume you can work it without thinking, and most other abbreviations are built from it.
How to work dc
Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops). Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops. In UK terms this is a treble (tr).
Common mistake
Mistaking the UK dc (which is a US single crochet) for the US dc.
Effect on your stitch count
It does not change the stitch count by itself.
How it looks in a pattern
A typical line (an invented example for illustration):
Row 2: Ch 1, dc in each st across, turn.
